Training is usually planned as a schedule of sessions, with recovery treated as whatever happens in between. Reversing that order describes the process more accurately, because the session is the stimulus and the adaptation occurs afterwards.

The session causes damage, not improvement

A hard training session leaves tissue disrupted, energy stores depleted and the nervous system fatigued. Immediately afterwards, capacity is lower than before.

Improvement comes from the repair process that follows, which rebuilds slightly beyond the previous baseline in response to the demand encountered.

This means the training itself does not produce the result. It produces the signal that the result is required.

Repair has a duration that cannot be shortened much

The processes involved run on biological timescales that respond only modestly to intervention, and different tissues recover at different speeds.

Muscle soreness typically resolves faster than tendon adaptation, and the nervous system can remain fatigued after the muscles feel ready.

That mismatch is why a person can feel recovered and still perform poorly, and why judging readiness by soreness alone is unreliable.

Total weekly load is the real budget

Since recovery capacity is finite over a week, the useful question is not how hard a session was but how much the week added up to.

Two hard sessions with adequate space between them commonly produce more adaptation than four sessions squeezed together, because the second pair never completes its repair cycle.

Programmes that keep increasing frequency without increasing recovery eventually convert additional training into additional fatigue and nothing else.

Sleep and food are the main inputs

The two variables with the largest influence on recovery are the ones least often adjusted, and both are usually constrained by circumstances outside training.

Shortened sleep reduces the quality of the repair process, and inadequate total energy intake means the body is being asked to rebuild without materials.

Someone whose life restricts either of those is not able to support the same weekly load as someone whose life does not, regardless of their willingness.

Deliberate easier weeks are part of the design

Experienced programmes build in periods of reduced load, not as rest from training but as the point at which accumulated fatigue is allowed to clear.

Performance frequently rises during those periods, which is direct evidence that fatigue rather than fitness had been the limiting factor.

Anyone training with pain that persists, or with symptoms that do not settle with rest, has a question for a clinician rather than a scheduling problem.
