It makes lapses immediately detectable
Simply attending to the breath provides no signal when attention departs, so a beginner can spend several minutes elsewhere without registering it.
Counting supplies a sequence that breaks audibly, since losing the count or discovering the number has climbed impossibly high is unmistakable.
The practice therefore delivers immediate feedback about the very thing beginners cannot yet detect on their own.
The count occupies verbal capacity
Internal commentary runs on the same resources used for silent counting, so maintaining a count limits how much narration can proceed simultaneously.
This gives beginners a period of relative quiet that would otherwise be difficult to reach, which makes the early sessions less discouraging.
The occupation is partial rather than complete, which is why thoughts still appear and why the count is still lost.
Short cycles prevent the count becoming automatic
Most instructions specify counting to a small number and starting again, commonly to ten, rather than counting indefinitely.
